Correct errors in birth certificates without court orders

Great news!

Did your midwife or doctor provide errors in your date of your birth or your gender to the NSO for your certificate of live birth? Worry no more because of a less hassle, less costly correction procedure!

President Noynoy Aquino signed the new law extending the power of local civil registrars to correct errors in birth certificate without any court order. This means correcting errors in the date of birth or gender of the individual no longer need a court order for it to be done.

Republic Act 10172, signed last August 19, amended certain provisions of Republic Act 9048. It extended the coverage of exemptions that require judicial approval before certificate correction can take place.

Under this new law, the municipal or city civil registrar or consul general may correct typographical errors in the day or month of date of birth or the gender without court approval.

Also, the new law specifies where the fees of the corrections would go - as per Section 8 or RA 10172, to "the funds of the Local Civil Registry Office concerned or the Office of the Consul General for modernization  of the office and hiring of new personnel and procurement of supplies, subject to government accounting and auditing rules."

RA 10172 is the consolidation of two bills passed by Congress, Senate Bill 3113 (last May 30) and House Bill 4530 (last June 5).
