Android smartphones most popular and widely used in 2012

Smartphones with built-in Android, the operating system introduced by Google Inc, take up the bulk of the world market share of smartphones in the second half of  2012.

Android-running smartphones sales boosted  up, cornering a large volume of units sold worldwide. The biggest loser is Nokia Corp's Symbian who saw its market share plunge down to a struggling 4.4 percent from a double-digit percent share last year.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), the premier global provider of market research, worldwide market share figures for smartphone unit sales by operating system are the following:

  • Android (Google Inc.) — 104.8 million units, 68.1 percent share (46.9 percent in 2011)
  • iOS (Apple Inc.’s iPhone) — 26.0 million units, 16.9 percent share (18.8 percent in 2011)
  • BlackBerry (Research in Motion Ltd.) — 7.4 million units, 4.8 percent share (11.5 percent in 2011)
  • Symbian (mostly used by Nokia Corp.) — 6.8 million units, 4.4 percent share (16.9 percent in 2011)
  • Windows (Microsoft Corp.) — 5.4 million units, 3.5 percent share (2.3 percent in 2011)
  • Linux — 3.5 million units, 2.3 percent share (3.0 percent in 2011)
  • Others — 0.1 million units, 0.1 percent share (0.5 percent in 2011)

Companies that have Android OS  in their smartphones include Samsung Electronics Co., HTC Corp., and Motorola Mobility (a subsidiary of Google).
