Hamsters as Pets

Cats, dogs and fish - these are the typical, commonly found household pets seen wherever you go. But, did you know that hamsters make good, interesting pets too? Well, that's aside from using them as laboratory subjects alongside mice.

This is probably the reason why a lot of Filipinos have joined the trend in adopting or petting hamsters. Compared to the centuries-long domesticated pets, caring for hamsters takes less maintenance; still, you really need to take good care of them and consider some usual and basic factors.

These factors include space and ventilation, financial capacity to buy basic hamster supplies (cage or bin, drinking bottle, kusot or bedding, hamster sand bath and bath house, pellets and other food, among others), and time which you can provide for them once you take them in.

There are different types of hamsters available in the Philippines, and it would be much better that I describe them based on the ease of taking good care of them. The three hamsters popular in the PH are campbell hamsters, roborovski hamsters, and syrian hamsters - all of which are shown  in the video provided above.

Here is a normal or Agouti campbell hamster - the wild color of the CHs. More colors are found in the link provided below.

Campbell hamsters come in the most variety of colors (depending on your specified want, if you have). They're relatively smaller than syrian hamsters, which are solitary animals (which means they must leave in a cage alone), but larger than roborovski hamsters (the smallest among the three). Campbell hamsters are easy to handle, though some are bitty. Still, they make good pets to both young and old. Most importantly, they're cheaper than the other hamster types.

These are roborovski hamsters, amazingly cute creatures.

Roborovski hamsters are the smallest and the cutest hamsters found in the Philippines. However, due to their size, it's hard to handle them (especially for young ones) so they're usually taken care of for visual sight (due to their cuddliness) or as attraction. Very fun to watch, they are fast, always curious, and definitely entertaining.

The cost of campbell and roborovski hamsters usually depend on the age; the more mature the hamster is, the higher is its price. Campbell hamsters could cost an average of 60 Php (for young or 1-2 months old ones), 100 Php (for 3 months up or breeding age, non-proven which means "had not successfully bred yet" ), and 150 Php (for breeding age, proven), each.

Roborovski hamsters' young (1-3 months old) cost within 300-350 Php. Non-proven breeding age roborovskis' costs lie within the 350-400 Php range, while proven breeding age roborovskis' prices lie within the 450-500 Php, each.

This, I believe, is a banded golden hamster. :)

Syrian hamsters may have long or short hairs. Long-haired syrians are called teddy bear hamsters, while short-haired syrians are called golden hamsters. They're the largest of the three. One difference between the two is the cost. Teddy bears are cheaper, while golden hamsters are expensive (more pricey than roborovski hamsters).

Another charming type of hamster is what people call the teddy bear or long-haired syrian hamster.

Teddy bear hamsters are priced the same way as campbell hamsters are priced. Meanwhile, golden hamsters cost around 300-400 Php (for Agouti or normal color), 750-800 Php (for Dark-Eared White, DEW), 1000-1100 Php (for Black-Eared Cream, BEC).

Hamsters, like most animals, are territorial; it's an instinct, so sometimes fights could break out especially if there's no proper introduction (by scent). That's why it is essential that you ask yourself first if your room or area has enough space for them (and possible for each one of them), and if you have easy financial access to spend more than your normal day-to-day living expenses.

This post is just a short guide to taking good care of hamsters. To become fully aware and to learn more about hamster,s you may join hamster enthusiast organizations (in their facebook groups) such as the Hamster Lovers Organization (HLO), the Circle of Hamster Owners in the Philippines (CHOP), and the Philippine Hamster Owners' Society (PHOS). Members of these organizations can provide insights and knowledge about how to take good care of hamsters.

Did Taylor Swift, Harry Styles break up?

Celebrity sweethearts Taylor Swift and Harry Styles (of One Direction) have called it quits after reports surfaced that the two broke up during their holiday trip.

The singer-songwriter and the boy-next-door have ended their month-long relationship for some unknown reason, as confirmed by an unnamed source to MailOnline recently.

The singers greeted 2013 with a public display of affection as they kissed each other midnight at the Times Square. They then flew to the British Virgin Islands to enjoy the first days of the New Year. A heated argument (lovers' quarrel) between the two might have led to what fans did not expect.

Allegedly, after the break-up, Taylor returned back to the US on January 4 while Harry was spotted with his guitar leaving Heathrow Airport three days after.

Not considering their relationship status, both Taylor and Harry have a hectic 2013 schedule ahead of them. One Direction will jumpstart their world tour this February. Taylor Swift will kick off her Red tour in March.

Gerald Anderson, Maja Salvador in a relationship?

Could it be true of what resounded yesterday as rumors of Gerald (Anderson) and Maja (Salvador) being in a relationship? I cannot confirm nor deny, but let's check out what Kim (Chiu) has to say about it.

During the press conference for Book 2 of top-rater drama-serye Ina, Kapatid, Anak (IKA), Kim broke her silence regarding the rumored relationship of former boyfriend Gerald and bestfriend Maja.

“For me, I’m happy for them, wala naman pong masama, pareho silang single at maging masaya na lang tayo sa kanilang dalawa. Nakakalungkot lang kasi yung friendship ay nasayang, yeah yung friendship namin ni (Maja),” Kim reacted when asked about the issue.

“Nagulat ako, nabigla hindi ko ini-expect na mangyayari ang ganito, bakit? Hindi naman ako bitter. Kung anuman ang nangyayari sa kanila, I’m happy for them, pero parang nalungkot lang ako na yung taong sinabihan ko noong time na down ako eh parang kinain niya lang yung sinabi niya,” the teleserye princess revealed.

Kim, however, said that she and Salvador are not fighting and are working professionally now. Maja seemed to have sought Kim's approval to date Anderson.

It may be recalled that Gerald and Sarah (Geronimo), who's close friends with Maja, had a thing between them too before. No statement from Sarah's camp has been released yet.

Does Kim's responses confirm the Gerald-Maja romance? It's your take.

SPOTTED: Teacher abuse student in Montessori Professional College Pasay

Abuses do happen all the time, but once caught and posted online, there's no escaping the ferocity of online critiques. A video of a teacher or professor caught on cam verbally and physically abusing a female student in Montessori Professional College Pasay has surfaced and has gathered views and negative barrage online.

Video Courtesy: jerico liriko

In the video, an argument seemed to heat up between students and their professor inside a classroom on a seemingly December school day which eventually led to physical and verbal attacks exposed through a device.

The real reason of the disturbing commotion is unclear. Online users bashed the incident and called for immediate action and solvency from the school administration.

What are your thoughts on this? Everyday, we meet different kinds of people; something must have aggravated the situation taunting the professor to launch verbal and physical attacks to the female student outside the classroom.

Although what was covered does not explain all sides, it is definitely NOT ACCEPTABLE to harm anyone or cause damages, mentally or physically. Exercise of proper restraint remains a challenge upon documentation of this shameless act.

SPOTTED: Opo Pinoy Style, parody version of Gangnam Style

Opo Pinoy Style, a parody version of international hit KPop dance video Oppa Gangnam Style, continues to gain popularity as of posting time. Released on Youtube last January 4, Opo Pinoy Style features Fil-Canadian comedian-singer Mikey Bustos and Paula Jamie Salvosa (Amalayer Girl).

The almost-four-minute-running Gangnam parody presents Philippine locations (e.g. Rizal Park in Manila) and speaks about Filipino practices that define who we are. It may boost our morale and inspire us more, the same way Mikey Bustos show how he's proud of his culture and identity.

Here are the lyrics of Opo Pinoy Style:

When I come around you know it's gunna be a party,
Cuz I come from a land that's more fun than the other countries,
Where we ace our exam with flying colours cuz we studied,
and there's nobody else that can cook better than our mommies

Yeah it's hotter here,
And that is why my skin is brown
and you'll find water here
to wash my bum after I'm done raiding my fridgidaire,
Cuz I proud that I'm pinoy I shout it everywhere, and tattooed it here

A baby duck still, inside the egg shell,
It tastes good
It's called balut
I eat my ulam, rice and sawsawan
with my hands, i close open,
you have two godparents I have ten...

Weeh...

Opo Pinoy style! Pinoy style.
Op-op-op-op-op opo Pinoy Style....
Pinoy style. Op-op-op-op-op opo Pinoy Style....
A pinay lady
stays where it's shadey!

My name is Mikey Bustos, your one and only Pinoyboy,
I'm pointing with my lips, cuz hands are busy eating penoy,
Blessing to the elderly I mano po to Lola,
but now my forehead smells like ginger cuz she cooked tinola

During summer yeah it is super scortching hot,
and the rest of the year, yes it is still so scortching hot,
but really I don't care,
Cuz I just use my split type air con, I can peepee here
almost anywhere

Cuz I do OK in videoke, magaling in tinikling,
Yes I am gwapo, haba ng hair mo, as I court you
That's how we do, Beautiful eyes will get to you!

Amalayer?!

Opo Pinoy style! Pinoy style.
Op-op-op-op-op opo Pinoy Style.... Pinoy style.
Op-op-op-op-op opo Pinoy Style....
Eh Tita Baby op-op-op-op-op Opo Pinoy style
Eh we're related op-op-op-op-op Opo Pinoy style

I wear barong, while eating chicharron
Just watch us take over the world with a plastic balloon
And I'm on my cell phone, texting in jejemon,
And I am BV during brown out cuz there's no aircon, bat ganun, Opo Pinoystyle

Long live Filipinos op-op-op-op-op Opo Pinoy style
Mabuhay ang pilipino op-op-op-op-op Opo Pinoy style

I'm just returning the favour!
