Philippines Statistics Overview - Population Census, Labor and Employment, Family Income, Education (Literacy Rate), Consumer Price Index, Establishments

Yesterday, I was able to grab a copy of the latest NSO-NCR's Fact Sheet No. 3 Series 2012, NSO's most requested statistical data about the Philippines. 

I am sharing with you the updated information about the Philippines especially its population, private building construction, BMDs (births, marriages and deaths), labor and employment, family income and expenditure, education (literacy rate), consumer prices, and business and industry.

Population of the Philippines
According to the fact sheet, in 2010 the Philippines' population rose to 92,337,852 from 88,304,615 - almost 4 million people added considering annual deaths which in 2007 hovered around 480,820. As of 2009, the number of registered  births in that year totaled to 1,745,585 with more males being born (907,221) compared to females (838,364).

In 2010, the most populated cities in the National Capital Region (NCR) were Quezon City (2,761,720 from 2,667,372 in 2007), Manila (1,652,171 from 1,650,712), and Calookan City (1,489,040 from 1,379,942). NCR made up 11,855,975 of the total  Philippine population in 2010. NCR accounted for 12.84% of the 2010 population.

The population growth rate of the Philippines slowed down to 1.90 percent (2010) from 2.04 percent (2007) - with a rapid decline in NCR from 2.10 percent to  1.78 percent in the same period covered.

34.0 percent of married women aged 15-49 years used the modern family planning method, whereas 16.7 percent used the traditional method. Modern method includes ligation/female sterilization, vasectomy/male sterilization, pill, IUD, injectibles, male condom, mucus/billings/ovulation, standard days method and lactational amenorrhea method. Traditional family planning method, on the other hand, considers calendar/rhythm/periodic abstinence, withdrawals and other methods.

Private Building and Construction in the Philippines
In the 1st quarter of 2012, as comparison to the 4th quarter construction performance of 2011, more than 5,000 private buildings were additionally constructed in the Philippines. Private buildings' total floor area reached 5,416,460 square meters with a value of approximately P49.16 billion, compared to the previous quarter's P43.76 billion.

Of the 29,585 buildings created in Q1 of 2012, 21,424 were allotted for residential while 4,085 were for non-residential purposes.

Household Labor and Employment in the Philippines
Labor  force participation rate in the Philippines rose from 64.3 percent in January 2012 to 64.7 percent in April 2012. Labor force  participation rate in NCR declined from 62.8 percent in January 2012 to 61.9 percent in April  2012.

Employment rate in the Philippines (April 2012)  rose to 93.1 percent from 92.8 percent in January. Unemployment rate  in the Philippines for the said time frame declined to 6.9 percent from 7.2 percent.

Underemployment rate, however, continuously rose between January and April 2012, from 18.8 percent to 19.3 percent.

Family Income and Expenditure in the Philippines
The annual average family income of Filipinos in 2009 rose to P206 thousand from P173 thousand three years prior. NCR felt a higher annual average family income of P356 thousand in 2009,  compared to P311 thousand in 2006.

In 2009, Filipinos generally saved more with P31 thousand in annual average family savings compared to P26 thousand in 2006. This was not the case in NCR wherein Filipinos saved less from P53 thousand in 2006 to P47 thousand in 2009.

Family expenditure generally rose up from P147 thousand (2006) to P176 thousand (2009), with NCR annually spending more from P258 thousand in 2006 to P309 thousand in 2009.

Education Status  in the Philippines
The nation's simple literacy rate, which includes basic reading and writing skills only for 10 years old and above, rose from 93.4 percent in 2003 to 95.6 percent in 2008. Simple literacy ate in NCR was highest at 99.2 percent, from 99.0 percent in 2003.

Functional literacy rate in the Philippines, which includes basic reading, writing, and computational skills, edged up to 86.4 percent in 2008 compared to 84.1 percent in 2003. Functional literacy rate in NCR, however, declined from 94.6 percent to 94.0 percent.

Establishments and Prices of Commodities  in the Philippines
The consumer price index was 100 in 2006. It then increased to 122.9 in February 2012 and 123.4 in May 2012.

Inflation rate hovered  above 2 percent - 2.3 percent in Feb, 2.7 percent in March, 2.5 percent in April, and 2.2 percent in May 2012.

The purchasing power of the peso remained at 0.81 all throughout the 1st quarter of 2012.

In 2011, the industries with the greatest presence or highest number of establishments were:
  • wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcyles (383,723), 93,209 of which were located in NCR
  • manufacturing  (112,766), 21,742 of which were located in NCR
  • accommodation and food services activities (105,105), 27,394 of which can be found in NCR
Meanwhile, the industries with the lowest number of establishments include:
  • mining and quarrying (559), 170 of which were in NCR
  • electricity gas stream and air conditioning supply (768),  130 of which were in NCR
  • water supply; sewerage waste management and remediation activities (1,055), 187 of which were in NCR
  • construction (2,972), 1,453 of which can be found in NCR
  • agriculture, forestry and fishing (5,096), wherein only 227 were situated in NCR
Other industries with establishments nationwide are the following:
  • transportation and storage (6,220)
  • real estate activities (6,476)
  • arts, entertainment and recreation (12,758)
  • education (15,199)
  • professional scientific and technical activities (18,365)
  • administrative and support services activities (18,754)
  • information and communication (19,508)
  • financial and insurance activities (28,593)
  • human health and social work activities (30,858)
  • other services activities (49,758)
