Tuition Fees in Private and State Universities

Here is a graphic of estimated tuition fees in some private universities (Ateneo, La Salle, UST, and FEU among others) and state universities (UP, PUP) in Metro Manila.

Produced by GMA News, the graphic shows the highs and lows of tuition fees being paid by students. One can pay as low as 1,000 PHP per semester if he/she is enrolling in a state university, while another can pay as high as 75,000 PHP per semester when taking up a course in private universities.

For a student who will enroll in UP Diliman, the median tuition fee could be 20000 PHP per semester (applicable only for STFAP Bracket B students who get these by default upon entry), but take note that tuition fees being paid can vary depending on the socio-economic status of the student, factors/criteria of which are being overhauled amid an outcry from student activists and other pro-education organizations to push for the scrapping of the TOFI (tuition and other fees increase) that was implemented in 2007.

The highest tuition fee in UP is 1500 PHP per unit per semester, applicable to STFAP Bracket A or those having high annual family income. I am yet to update how the Brackets are divided in numbers/strata. The lowest Brackets awarded are Brackets E1 and E2 in which recognized students get to pay nothing and receive monthly stipend.

Students who will enroll in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) get to pay a tuition fee of approximately 1,000 PHP per semester. This is probably one of the lowest tuition fees in the Philippines.

In private universities, like Ateneo, scholarships assist financially challenged yet academically excelling students, who are usually top graduates of their high school batches or continuing retainers of high academic performances in their chosen fields.

Payment of tuition fees in various universities vary accordingly as implemented by each school's administration. Scholarships are readily available in most universities. Alumni or employee privileges also affect the student's net tuition fee payments.
