GOOD NEWS: PH stock market, one of the best performing global markets in 2014

Compensation? Yes, meron din po. Read more here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Investors and would-be-investors in the PH stock market must be excited to hear this great news! Confidence in the vibrant PH economy has not faded, to date!

The Philippine stock market landed number 7 on the list of the best performing global markets in 2014. It had an increase of 22.01%, with benchmark year-end-performance set at December 23, 2014; this means the PH stock exchange index's performance may be higher than what was recorded by CNN on the last trading day, December 29; that's around (22.01% + 0.62%) = a whooping 22.63%!The PH stock market even outpaced that of neighboring Indonesia's (20.24%) at number 9.

For the common tao, or in layman's term (well, also as how a non-Economics student like me understands haha), this only means that more investors are interested to pour their cash into public companies because they know these companies may be regional economic giants. Not only are they interested, but they are optimistic that the promising economic success story of the Philippines will steal the international spotlight soon. However, here's a caveat, the article only mentioned 74 big markets; the others have not been included in the list (there are more than 190 nations in the world!).

Leading the list of top performing international markets are Argentina (54.51%) and economic giant China (43.32%). It may be recalled that this year's most valuable tech startup is Xiaomi, a Chinese smartphone maker which overtook Samsung in terms of sales units (in some countries that Samsun formerly dominated) for the first time in years, valued at 45 billion USD.

The worst global markets with biggest losses in 2014 include those of Greece (-26.62%) and Russia (-44.9%) which made headlines this year for annexing Ukraine's region Crimea. It's believed that Russia's on a recession today as an effect of the collapse of the oil prices worldwide (due to increased US supplies) and the economic sanctions imposed by countries against the political and military struggles ongoing at the proximity of Russia's borders.

SPOTTED: Top 4 fake PH news stories of 2014

Some stories are worth sharing, whether they are true-to-life or just plain fiction, but when it comes to public understanding, not all should be shared, especially the fake ones.

Here are four of news stories that circulated rounds on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter by rumor-lover Pinoys.

1. Death of Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer

MYTH: It was rumored early in December that Cesar Millan, the popular Dog Whisperer, died of a heart attack. It wasn't true after all; you can even check out his Wikipedia (unreliable) page or search all throughout Google; you'll realize he didn't succumb to any disease. It was all plain BS!

REPOST: Tropical storm 'Domeng' enters PH area of responsibility

REPOSTED FROM INQUIRER as reported by Frances Mangosing

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Storm “Domeng” (international name Peipah), which entered the Philippine area of responsibility Sunday night, is expected to bring rains over parts of the Visayas and Mindanao on Monday.

Forecasters of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that “Domeng” could still intensify into a typhoon before making landfall on Wednesday.

Weather forecaster Meno Mendoza said that as of 4 p.m. Sunday, “Domeng” was at 1,020 kilometers east of General Santos City, moving west-northwest at 20 kilometers per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 80 kilometers per hour.

Mendoza said that moderate to heavy rains (5 mm to 15 mm per hour) would fall within the 400-kilometer diameter of the storm.

According to the weather forecaster, should the tropical storm maintain its current speed and track, it will be at 570 kilometers east of Davao City by Monday afternoon and 180 kilometers east of Surigao City by Tuesday. On Wednesday afternoon, it is expected to be in the vicinity of Cebu City.

He said that they were expecting “Domeng” to make landfall on Wednesday somewhere in the Eastern Visayas.

“If it changes track, it could go higher and pass through Southern Luzon and even Metro Manila,” Mendoza pointed out.

He said that the weather bureau has not discounted the possibility that the storm could further gain strength while over water.

In its forecast for Monday, Pagasa said that Mindanao and the regions of the Cagayan Valley as well as the Eastern and Central Visayas would have cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms while Metro Manila and the rest of the archipelago would be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening.

Moderate to strong winds will prevail over the northern and eastern sections of the country where coastal waters will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate with slight to moderate seas.

BAGYO UPDATE: Yolanda when it hit Bacolod City and Iloilo City

Instagram users Ric Martin, Jr., Karina Nisol, and Sitine provided video footages of Yolanda's fury in Bacolod City.

Instagram users Denise Rivera and Menchie Mateo also shared scenes from Iloilo City.

BAGYO UPDATE: Jiggy Manicad and Love Añover report on Yolanda devastation in Leyte on State of the Nation

In an emotional report on "State of the Nation with Jessica Soho," GMA News reports Jiggy Manicad and Love Añover reported on the extent of devastation in Leyte, which received the brunt of Typhoon Yolanda's extraordinary force on Friday.

Manicad reported that at least 20 bodies of storm victims, including children, were being kept in a local church because the local funeral parlors had been destroyed. Añover was unable to hold back tears while recounting the terrifying experience of being inside a cathedral as its roof was being torn off by strong winds.

Attorney Kapunan withdraws as legal counsel of Napoles

MAKATI, Philippines – Attorney Lorna Kapunan has withdrawn as Janet Napoles’ lawyer in the serious illegal detention case filed by PDAF scam whistle blower Benhur Luy against Napoles due to ‘differences in opinion’.

The bail hearing is being conducted at the Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 150 where Benhur Luy and other witnesses have testified.

It was reported that Kapunan did not participate in the court proceedings Wednesday; immediately, she reportedly resigned as Napoles’ counsel. She, however, still has yet to make an official statement on her withdrawal.

Janet Napoles, the alleged mastermind of the pork barrel scam, is presently detained at Fort Sto. Domingo in Laguna.
