SPOTTED | Student filmmaker spies on thief who stole his smartphone for documentary

What happens to a stolen smartphone after the theft?

This was mainly what was in mind of a young filmmaker in Amsterdam who  produced a short documentary about the life of a smartphone thief. There's a catch though; unless the sim card is destroyed or the phone is reset, the documentary about this thief's life continues.

All student filmmaker Anthony van der Meer needed to do were to bug his smartphone, wait for it to be stolen, and eventually, monitor the thief.

For this documentary, der Meer intentionally had his smartphone stolen. Before the theft took place, the smartphone was loaded with a bugging software Cerberus whichs gave the young docu maker access to his  stolen device's location and information which include new messages and contacts added. The app alsoo allowed der Meer to have sort of control over its camera and microphone through WiFi access.

The actual theft wasn't documented due to unforeseen circumstances. However, for two weeks, der Meer spied on the thief. He compiled the details and clips and then made these into the short film seen below called "Find My Phone - Subtitled".

Since December 13, the film has already reached 4.1 million views.

Reaction:
Although it's not that normal a theme to take center stage in short films and documentaries, I find this really interesting. Getting to know a thief through surveillance technology, although it somewhat bypasses privacy, is actually an out-of-the-box way of crafting a film project dedicated towards

But, if you were to be asked, was it really a good idea to conduct such snooping? For me, it was quite justifiable. The clip did tell us something about the thief's life. In fact, it gave us a sneak peek of the type of person this man is, only to realize in the end that what we see or hear through a smartphone may or may not be what is real.

In der Meer's words, "suddenly, I had made eye contact with the thief. In front of me was a completely different person than I imagined. Nothing was left of the sad, kind man I thought I knew. I realized that the bond I thought I had built with him was merely one-sided. The aggressive attitude and the smell of hasj that surrounded him, made it clear to me; I don't know this man in front of me after all."

VIDEO | Cute or cruel? These puppies obey their master like soldiers.

I came across this video on Facebook wherein a pack of cute, little puppies (poodles?) were walking along a park with their master. What's pretty interesting though is how these pups follow according to their master's instructions. The pack followed a synchronized movement, except for an instance when the bigger pup walk on his/her two hind feet which, for some viewers, was to an extent cruel. Is this video cruel or just plain cute?

Almost all women will experience this -- menstruation. But how does it happen? And why does it happen? What makes one cycle of menstruation? And why does it take an average of 28 days?

Image Screencap: Youtube channel TED-Ed

VIRAL VIDEO | OFW lambasts Bureau of Customs for new Balikbayan rules

A plan by the Bureau of Customs (BoC) to impose additional taxes on balikbayan box has come under fire, particularly from OFWs like Geneva Medina who has had enough of all the burden that the government is placing on them.

The BoC's new rules set to provide tougher measures on balikbayan packages sent by OFWs was set to deter illegal smugglers and traders who take advantage of the tax-free balikbayan boxes.

Some of the rules concerning OFWs include:
  • limit (no excess) of 500$ in value
  • canned goods, grocery items and other household effects must not exceed a dozen a kind, while apparel whether used or new must not exceed three yards per cut
  • corruption and lost items
  • increased clearing fees for all containers to as much as Php 100,000 to Php  120,000
But Medina just couldn't give in, that she hinted at the corruption going on inside the bureau and in the country as a whole. She furiously pointed out that OFWs left the country to work for their families. The government should instead help the OFWs help their loved ones, rather than slap taxes and go through all those balikbayan boxes which causes delay.

MUST KNOW | How does the economy really work? (VIDEO)

I have always wanted to figure out and understand how the economy really works, but it's hard to understand intangible concepts like recession, depression, credit, deficit, interest rate, etc without a good visual aid to compliment.

Marami akong gustong malaman tungkol sa ekonomiya, kaso andaming basahin na hindi ko rin maintindihan lalo na kung puro graphs lang at math ang nakikita.

What powers up the economic machine? What are the basic driving forces behind an economy? When is credit a good one? When is it called bad credit?

How can we help the economy? What do financial assets like stocks, bonds, and other investments have to do with the economy? So many questions in mind that really boggled me, until I found this video that enabled me to really understand the relationships that exist to run the economy.

Paano ba tayo makakatulong sa paglago ng ekonomiya ng bansa? How can we help the government achieve the target 7-8 percent GDP growth?

Seriously, if you want to have some crash course on how the economy works, you better watch this vid 'cause you will definitely thank the author of the video, businessman Ray Dalio, for explaining it clearly in an interesting animation!

FUNNY: The art of selfie, boys vs girls

There's one random question that popped in mind. We all have our own differences; each one of us is unique in one way or another.

Guys drink more than girls. Most guys play a sport that most girls don't. Girls love to gossip; most guys just keep to themselves. Girls take longer in the shower than guys do. And the list just never ends!

But what about when taking selfies? Is there a difference when boys take selfies and when girls take selfies? Watch the funny viral video below. :))
